Rihanna (aka Robyn Fenty) was born on February 20th 1988 in ST Michael, Barbados. Rihanna moved to the USA when she turned 16 to further pursue her young career as an R&B performing artist. Soon after moving to the United States, she signed a breakthrough contract with Def Jam Records and Evan Rogers.
2005 saw the release of Rihanna’s debut album entitled “Music of the Sun” which quickly climbed the Billboard charts to break the top 10 with the single “Pon de Replay”. Then in 2006, Rihanna followed on the success of her first album with “A Girl Like Me” which broke the top 5 on the Billboard Charts. The second album also produced Rihanna’s very first #1 hit song with “SOS”. Continuing with her string of successful albums, Rihanna dropped perhaps her best album to date with “Good Girl Gone Bad”.
The 2007 “Good Girl Gone Bad” album produced a string of hits like: ”Umbrella”, “Take a Bow”, “Disturbia” and “Don’t Stop the Music” and was nominated for 9 Grammy Awards that year. Rihanna delivered her 4th album “Rated R” in 2009 and her 5th “Loud” in 2010 to similar acclamation.
Rihanna states that one of the most prominent influences throughout her life is Mariah Carey. She looked up to her as a complete performing artist. Rihanna also credits Madonna as one of her idols and greatest influences from a young age because of the way she continued to reinvent herself year after year. Also, Janet Jackson played an important inspirational part in the artists young life. She credits other musical inspirations from Gwen Stefani, Bob Marley, Destinys Child, and Alicia Keys among others.
Rihanna has become best know for her unique style of R&B that blends a variety of musical inspirations such as, Caribbean, dancehall and reggae. Her musical style continues to evolve as she matures as an artist. Originally, her sound was heavily influenced by her Caribbean roots, but now the singer tends to favor a more contemporary R&B style.
Rihanna’s worldwide popularity has helped her quickly become one of the highest selling performing artists of all time. As her popularity continues to build, there’s no telling just how far she can climb.
